Dancing Monkey

Sometimes I’m pretty naive.  When I first signed up as Cub Master, I thought, how hard can it be, you act like a dancing monkey, you entertain the kids, you help build them up and you serve as the front man for the organization.  That didn’t last long, quickly I realized that as the front man, you are dealing with parents and kids with real issues.  For some reason everyone thinks that as Cub Master you are somehow trained and compensated for the position so that you can act as a psychologist, administrator, etc.  I also stepped into a position where I was constantly picking up the slack for other volunteers without work ethic or any kind of self motivation, waiting around to be told specifically what to do and when to do it.  I went from dancing monkey to corporate trainer, trying to make sure everyone understood the expectations, trying to motivate people that don’t answer their email or voicemail and it’s iffy if they are going to show up to a meeting.  Trying to keep happy all of the drop off parents that expect me to be a surrogate mom for their kids, (make that grandparent, cause they kind of want me to spoil their kids too!)….   It was like a weight was lifted from my chest when both of my boys crossed over to scouts and I was allowed to just be an ASM, supporting the Scoutmaster.  Trying to be his advocate and to make his job easier.

Then they asked me to be the Scoutmaster.   I thought, how hard can it be, you act like a dancing monkey, you entertain the kids, you help build them up and you serve as the front man for the organization.  That didn’t last long…
